Osteoporosis means porous bones, and it is a disease that is not ususally diagnosed until a person presents with a fracture. It is known as the “silent” disease. One in two women and one in three men have osteoporosis. The Irish Osteoporosis Society is an excellent resource and has extensive information on the risk factors associated with osteoporosis and its management. Exercise, both weight-bearing, progressive strength training (PRT) and high intensity progressive strength training (HiPRT) has been shown to be highly effective in restoring bone health in combination with other interventions. If you are concerned that you may have Osteoporosis, contact your GP for a full Bone Health screen.
The clinic has specialised in the treatment and management of osteoporosis. We have designed specific programmes for osteopenia and osteoporosis and each individual will be assessed by a Chartered Physiotherapist to evaluate their needs. We offer home programmes, Osteofit Pilates classes, progressive resistance training classes ( PRT) and high intensity progressive Resistance training classes ( HiPRT). All the exercises are based on international research, which include weight –bearing, strength training and balance exercises – all important in the improvement of your bone density and reversal of osteoporosis. Balance re-training is very important , as it prevents falls and therefore reduces your risk of fracture. We have seen excellent outcomes and improvements within our group on repeat DEXA scans.
